The river moves through the open ground under soft light. Trees stand close along the banks, the water quiet and steady. The light falls evenly across the surface, the kind of ordinary afternoon the Thumb keeps along its smaller streams. Nothing is hurried; the water simply continues, the banks weathered and still on either side.
