October is the most generous month the Thumb offers a photographer. The landscape is at its most itself — color, texture, depth — and the light knows exactly what to do with it.

The full archive, organized by the month the shutter opened. Each collection holds the photographs from that particular stretch of the year — gathered across multiple seasons of returning to the same roads, the same fields, the same barns in different light.

• JanuaryThe hardest light of the year. The sky goes white and stays there. Bare trees cast shadows that cross the snow like pencil lines, and the barns stand out with a clarity that warmer months won't allow. January asks nothing of color. It has structure instead.
• FebruaryThe grey month. Not the dramatic grey of a storm, but the settled, patient grey of a sky that has been that way for weeks. February light is flat and diffuse and honest. There are no shadows to hide in. The landscape shows itself without flattery.
• MarchThe light starts to move again. Not warm yet, but no longer still. The fields hold patches of old snow beside bare muddy ground, and the barns look like they have been waiting — which they have. There is tension in March photographs, the kind that comes just before something changes.
• AprilThe first real green appears at the edges of things — at the base of fence posts, along the ditches, in the corners of fields. April light has a softness to it, a tentative quality, as if the season is not yet certain of itself.
• MayThe Thumb opens up in May. The fields go green in earnest, the sky regains its depth, and the light arrives earlier and stays later. May is generous with its light — it comes from a good angle, it lasts, and it makes the landscape look the way people remember it looking.
• JuneThe evenings are long and the light is gold by seven. There is a fullness to June that is hard to describe and easy to feel — in the way a red barn sits against a blue sky and looks like it was placed there on purpose.
• JulyDeep summer. The green is at its fullest and the light is high and warm and sometimes hazy. The animals are slow. The fields are still. The barns look rooted in a way they don't in shoulder seasons. July is the month the landscape stops moving and simply is.
• AugustThe first hints of turning arrive before anyone admits it. A field goes golden at the edges. August photographs sit at that threshold — still full summer in feel, but with something underneath that says the season is measuring itself.
• SeptemberThe pivot month. The light drops in angle and warms in tone and suddenly everything the camera sees is better than it was two weeks ago. The barns catch the late afternoon at a low enough angle that their textures become visible in a way summer didn't allow.

• NovemberThe color goes out. The leaves fall and the fields go brown and the sky returns to grey, and what is left is the architecture of the landscape — the bones of it. November photographs are quiet and a little stark and completely honest.
• DecemberSnow changes everything and nothing. December photographs have a hush to them. The landscape folds in on itself, quieter than any other month, and what remains — a red barn against fresh white, a grey structure in flat winter light — is enough. It is always enough.
