A long grey barn stands alone on Wilder Road, its weathered boards darkened by years of weather and its roof still holding the last thin layer of snow. The sky is heavy and low. Bare trees line the far edge of the field. Muddy tracks and shallow puddles mark the soft ground where winter has only just begun to loosen its hold.

This is the quiet hinge of the season in Michigan’s Thumb — when the land is neither fully asleep nor fully awake. The barn does not announce itself. It simply remains, patient and unadorned, under the cool spring light.
